Capt. Kevin Foley, Master, Schooner Hindu
Date and Time: Wednesday, March 10at 7 pm
Place: Key West Public Library, Auditorium
Captain Foley hails from Eastham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts and is master of the 60-foot schooner, Hindu, now berthed at Stock Island. When he was twelve years old, he started working as a deck hand on Hindu. The schooner was then sailing out of Provincetown taking tourists out for day sails. Eventually, he obtained a Coast Guard license and served as master of Hindu and other sailing vessels owned by the owner of Hindu. In the mid-seventies, he purchased his own boat, a 27-foot sloop, and, with his family, cruised extensively along the East Coast, in the Bahamas in the Caribbean, and on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1995, he was amazed to land a job as captain of the replica of the famous schooner America. After working on the America and several other schooners, he discovered Hindu rotting away in a boatyard in Fairhaven, Mass. Using his life savings, borrowing money, and existing on peanut butter sandwiches, he restored Hindu over a period of two years. Captain Foley will tell the history of Hindu and relate some of his experiences sailing her and other schooners he has captained.
